What You Don't Know - But Need to Know About Total Energy Recovery Wheels to Enhance Your Mechanical Designs and WOW Your Clients:  Lessons Learned Over 40 Years

The following topcs will be discussed:

o The power of proper engineering due diligence – how critical duty total energy wheels  have saved the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine over $100,000,000, enough to pay for  1.5 medical research laboratories

o Total energy recovery wheels can be applied to most laboratories and comply  with ASHRAE 62 Addendum K producing better IAQ then in most offices and schools.

o A total energy wheel must be BOTH an energy recovery device AND an indoor air quality  device which does not transfer contaminants back to the occupied space ? otherwise use  a recirculation damper – it is cheaper!

o Recent ASHRAE 62 Committee clarification – recirculated air does not count as outdoor  air so a recovery wheel purge section should be utilized.

o AHRI RER – why the parasitic fan energy associated with high wheel pressure loss should  be avoided – specify high latent performance and low pressure loss.

o Avoiding frosting and condensation conditions - why high latent performance is key.

o Proper economizer control significantly increases energy savings - don’t go cheap.

o Combining these total energy recovery best practices to form advanced desiccant  based systems for neutral air and low dewpoint applications – benefits recognized.

Speaker:

John Fischer, Director of Technology, SEMCO, Inc. (a division of FlaktWoods)
Education:  Chemical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg, PA
Relevant Accomplishments:

o One of the industry's top experts in the field of Energy Recovery, Dehumidification,  Chilled Beams and Indoor Air Quality with 40 years of experience.

o Has authored numerous ASHRAE Journal Articles and Technical Papers on these topics.

o Granted nine patents for important innovations in the field of desiccant based energy  recovery and dehumidification systems including the first total energy wheel to  address the important issue of desiccant cross?contamination (3 Angstrom Wheel).

o Consulted with and provided guidance to owners/designers of numerous key research  facilities globally incorporating  total energy recovery including Johns Hopkins, NIH,  Medical Research Council (Cambridge England), CREATE Laboratories (Singapore) and  many others involving more than 75,000,000 cfm of outdoor air.
