Moving Beyond Media Headlines to Gain a Better Understanding of Legionella Bacteria, Presented by Josh Koontz of Evapco
Just the word Legionella can make engineers and their customers uncomfortable. Understanding what Legionella Bacteria is and how it can lead to Legionnaires Disease is not typically discussed with much technical detail when presented by today’s fast paced media. This presentation will provide a foundational understanding of Legionella Bacteria and Legionnaires Disease. An overview of the work undertaken by ASHRAE on this subject (Standard 188) will be presented along with design and maintenance aspects which should be considered to minimize risk. A broader, whole-building approach to risk minimization could help to distinguish between single source and multiple exposure point outbreaks in the future. Information will be presented on the series of outbreaks which occurred regionally in 2015. Additional reference materials will be presented for those interested in additional reading on the subject.

Speaker's Bio:
Josh Koontz has spent the last five years with Evapco focused on developing and marketing new water treatment technologies for evaporative cooling systems. These efforts have been focused on treatment technologies that improve sustainability, ease of use and operator safety. Prior to Evapco, Josh was introduced to the science of water treatment by serving in the US Air Force. His 7 years in service included a tour in Iraq during Operation Enduring Freedom where Josh was tasked to startup and operate reserve osmosis systems supplying water to the joint coalition base. After completing his bachelor’s degree in Aeronautics, Josh decided to focus his professional career in water treatment. Josh worked in various account management positions with both General Electric’s Water and Process division and Nalco. His five years of experience working in the heavy and middle markets for these companies provided Josh with the technical expertise and the real-world understanding that there is a better way to treat evaporative cooling systems.
